Oriental rugs require surprisingly little maintenance, but they must have proper care. A high percentage of oriental rugs are made of wool, which is a durable natural fiber that is economically maintained, resilient, and will out last many other materials.
CLEANING - Cleaning should be entrusted to a professional oriental rug cleaner to ensure that your rug is cleaned properly and not damaged in the process. Steam cleaning, dry cleaning, and certain chemical processes can remove the natural oils from the wool and the wool may become brittle and wear more rapidly. Proper cleaning will bring out the richness in color, revitalize the wool fibers, and enhance your rugs longevity. Depending on the amount of foot traffic, a washing is recommended at least once every two to five years.
STAIN REMOVAL - Always BLOT. When a spill occurs, act immediately. BLOT with a paper towel, sponge or clean cloth rag. NEVER RUB. Allow the capillary action of the cloth to draw the spilled liquid upward. Adding cold water in small quantities, to the spilled area may assist with blotting.
Never use hot water. For solids, take a spoon and remove material by carefully scooping. Avoid chemical cleaning solutions, bleaches and alkalis. Club soda or a mild liquid dish soap may be used in a diluted mix for more difficult spills. Remember, spills of virtually any nature may be removed without permanent stain IF taken care of in time. In certain climates, failure to remove ALL moisture may result in mildew. Blot the wet area until ALL moisture is removed and remember to consult a professional oriental rug cleaner for difficult spills or stains
RESTORATION - Oriental rugs can be restored to a near new condition. In case of damage, rugs can be rewoven or repaired to correct almost any problem. Again, this is an area where an experienced professional should be sought out..
ROTATION - To insure that your rug will wear evenly in traffic areas Your rug should be rotated at least once a year. In harsh environments, where the sun is very intense, rotation will lessen the chance that your rugs will fade unevenly. You may wish to rotate your rugs more frequently.
VACUUMING - Oriental rugs should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dirt and restore life to the fibers. The vacuum should move in the same direction as the nap of the carpet. (Direction of the nap can be determined by running your hand across the pile from fringe to fringe). Vacuuming against the grain presses the dirt back into the carpet. Vacuuming from side to side rather than end to end is an easy way to avoid the direction of nap issue. The fringe should never be vacuumed, but swept with a broom as needed. It is best to use a vacuum that works only on suction and does not "beat" the rug. However, twice a year the beating type vacuum should be used on both the, front and back of the rug. This applies to wool rugs only. Silk rugs should never have a vacuum used on them.
PADDING - Oriental rugs have a remarkable ability to withstand wear and their life span far outlives that of machine made rugs. Padding acts as an impact dampener so that the carpet pile does not wear prematurely, wearing the pile down to the foundation. With a proper pad the underside of your rug will not wear out; the rug will be softer to walk on; and the rug will not move or wrinkle. More importantly, any dirt rests on the pad and not the rug. Over time it is dirt that is the main culprit for premature wear. By keeping your rug insulated through proper padding, you are enhancing the longevity of your rug.
ORIENTAL RUGS ARE NOT ONLY BEAUTIFUL; THEY ARE THE MOST PRACTICAL HOME FURNISHING YOU CAN BUY. THEY ENHANCE ANY DECOR WITH THEIR BEAUTY, AND MAKE A ROOM AN INDIVIDUAL CREATION. GIVEN PROPER CARE, AN ORIENTAL RUG WILL BE A DURABLE FLOOR COVERING AS WELL AS A TREASURED WORK OF ART
